CONFRONTING URBAN REALITIES
Lecture by Ralf Pasel, Visiting Professor, Academy of Architecture and Urban Planning Rotterdam


Ralf Pasel and 4 of his students will give a lecture on their WOC – Working On Cities Research and Design Studio hold in Ghana last year. Objective of the studio was to obtain insight in the cultural and social structures of informal settlements in order to contribute more and more effectively to the environment of the urban poor.

Rotterdam’s first vertical gardens designed by pasel.künzel architects With a grand inauguration ceremony beginning of June, newly elected alderman of Rotterdam, Alexandra van Huffele presented the first two green façades to the city of Rotterdam.

The green twins, flanking a part of Rotterdam’s main market, were realized with a sustainable bio-cladding-system, contributing to the municipalities City Lounge Project, a vision for enhancing public spaces in Rotterdam.

Blue Award 09
The Working on Cities Programme (WOC) of Visiting Professor Ralf Pasel was awarded with an Honorable Mention in the Blue Award 2009 in Vienna.

Jury: The project ‘Royal Trees of Ghana’ is based on a subtle study of the qualities of the land, the local species of vegetation and the population’s behavior in both private and public spaces.

GreenWaveSystems powered by pasel.künzel architects
GreenWave is a brand new bio-cladding-system that can be used in divers situations to supply more green to the urban context using vertical facades as a carrier. The product enables plants of all kind to grow in natural soil, allowing for an enormous variety in planting.

pasel.künzel architects is not only involved in developing the product itself but is also engaged in designing a branding strategy reaching from corporate identity to communication tools.

The new GreenWaveSystem product was presented for the first time to the public at the international façade trade fair ‘GEVEL’ at Rotterdam’s AHOI from 27th to 29th of January 2010.

Projects for the Open City, curated by Ralf Pasel, displays an extract of projects originating from different universities all around the world, rendering a unique cross-section on how the Open City is perceived and discussed globally. Compared to so-called ‘best practice’ projects the selection shows how Open City conditions are discovered and designed in an academic context, enhancing the situation of urban living and mutual coexistence.

Open City

Our Elemental project in Chile is part of this years’ 4th International Architecture Biennale in Rotterdam. It contributes to the Open City by referring to ‘informal urban developments’ that had been legalized and turned ‘formal’ by a collective and participatory building process of several stake holders, under which government, architect and client.

The article describes the chances and dilemmas of private developments in high dense urban environments - from niche to trend. The matter is vehemently discussed and argued about in the actual debate of city planning in the Netherlands.

45 academic projects from 28 universities worldwide feature the Open City, contributing to the debate around Designing Coexistence.

Parallel Cases is an example of the Open City par excellence. It is set in the old gigantic industrial RDM shipyard in the middle of the Port of Rotterdam, proving that abandoned urban areas can be opened up again for city life.

WOC - Working on Cities: GHANA*ATL

After an intensive year of studying informal conditions of our cities in general and the intuitive settlement of Aygya, Kumasi, Ghana in particular, the final presentation of the GHANA*ATL will round up this years WOC-Working on Cites program.

The results will be presented to the public for the first time and will comprise an extended analysis on the status of the informal city and on Ayigya, impressions from the field trip to Ghana in January, February and July and the integral final project proposals.

WOC - Working on Cities

Visiting professor Ralf Pasel has founded and set up the WOC-Working on Cities program that explores informal urban structures in order to contribute more and more effectively to the environment of the urban poor.

This annual program is set up in interdisciplinary teams - architects, urban planners and urban managers - collaborating this year with the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design, Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) affiliated to the Erasmus University Rotterdam en the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana.

This year’s program GHANA*ATL works on the informal settlement of Ayigya in the city of Kumasi, Ghana.
36 students and 6 teachers from 3 universities work collectively on 4 interdisciplinary projects, tackling the core problems of Ayigya on 4 different scales.

THE HIDDEN CITY – 5th International Summer School 2009

15 august – 27 august Frederik Künzel will teach at this year’s International Summer School in Rotterdam. The Summer School is designed to provide bachelor and master students and young professionals an exercise in dealing with a unique, yet realistic design problem.
